Foliphos provides a combination of highly available Phosphorus and Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid in a single injection. It is designed to provide high performance animals with supplementary amounts of these important nutrients during training or when signs of deficiency are apparent.
Phosphorus is the most important mineral involved in cell activity, as it is the major component of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) - the energy source for cells, including working muscles.
Phosphorus is also a major structural mineral in bone and acts as a blood and urine buffer to maintain body pH.
Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid are essential for production of red blood cells - the cells that carry oxygen around the body to be used in the production of energy and ATP.
A deficiency of phosphorus, Vitamin B12 or Folic Acid can all lead to loss of stamina, muscle efficiency and athletic performance. Foliphos is the only product that provides all three nutrients in a single injection.
PHOSPHORUS FOR MUSCLE ENERGY PRODUCTION
A high level of athletic performance requires efficient utilization of large amounts of energy to produce muscular contraction. The main nutrients from which cells extract energy are oxygen and the foodstuffs - carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Inside cells the foodstuffs react chemically with oxygen under the influence of various enzymes and energy is released. This energy is used to form ATP.
ATP is the ultimate energy source used by working muscles. ATP contains three phosphate molecules. During exercise ATP is converted to ADP which releases large amounts of energy to fuel muscle contraction. In this process one of the phosphate molecules is utilised. In order for muscle contraction and exercise to continue, ATP stores must by immediately replenished. High-energy phosphates stored in the muscles as creatine phosphate provide energy to quickly replenish these ATP supplies.
Foliphos contains Butafosfan, a highly available form of phosphorus. Regular injections of Foliphos during training provide a ready source of phosphorus that can be incorporated into high-energy phosphate complexes in the body tissues, particularly muscles.
FOLIC ACID AND VITAMIN B12 FOR RED BLOOD CELL PRODUCTION
Two B-Complex vitamins, Folic Acid and Vitamin B12 in combination, are essential for red blood cell production in the bone marrow. Red blood cells carry oxygen to body tissues where it is used in chemical reactions that convert food into energy to fuel cell functioning. Oxygen is essential for the process of "oxidative phosphorylation" by which 90% of the ATP within the body is produced. Remember that ATP is the phosphorus-containing molecule that powers muscle cells during exercise.
A low red blood cell count, or anaemia, decreases the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood and leads to loss of stamina, fatigue and poor performance. A deficiency of either folic acid or Vitamin B12 causes macrocytic (large cell) anaemia.
Folic acid is a vitamin that is commonly deficient in the diet of stabled horses. Fresh, green feed is rich in folic acid, however hay and grains often contain inadequate levels to meet the needs of horses in training. Vitamin B12 can be synthesised by bacteria in the hindgut of the horse, however high grain/low roughage diets can lead to gut acidity and disruption to the normal bacterial populations which may interfere with B12 production.
Foliphos provides high levels of folic acid in combination with a long acting form of Vitamin B12 to boost the natural levels of these vitamins in hard working, stabled horses.
STIMULATE THE APPETITE
Vitamin B12 is needed for the metabolism of propionate, a volatile fatty acid produced by the bacterial fermentation of starch in the hindgut. Horses on high grain diets have increased propionate production due to high starch levels in cereal grains. If B12 levels are inadequate, propionate can accumulate in the blood, resulting in appetite depression.
Foliphos provides a Vitamin B12 boost to maintain blood and liver B12 levels and help stimulate and maintain the appetite.
Directions for use: Administer by intravenous, intramuscular or subcutaneous injection. Sterile technique and equipment must be used for each injection. Intravenous injections should be only undertaken by, or under the supervision of, a registered veterinarian.
In Acutely diseased animals:
Small Dogs: 0.5ml to 2mL
Large Dogs: 0.5mL to 5mL
Horses: 20mL. Repeat daily if required.
In chronic diseased animals:
Half the above dose at intervals of 1 - 2 weeks or less.
In healthy animals:
Half the previous dose. Volumes of more than 20mL should be split and given at several intravenous, intramuscular sites or given subcutaneously.
Foliphos is available in 100mL multi-dose vials.
